One of the most common questions I hear is, “What's the point of Hoopers or Scent? My dog doesn’t need to do that; they need obedience classes.”
It’s understandable - people often see obedience training as the only way to a well-behaved dog. But here’s the thing: dogs, just like humans, don’t only need to do things that are practical or necessary. They benefit from activities that are fun and enriching. And in many cases, dog sports, whether mental or physical can actually make your dog's responsiveness easier and more enjoyable for both of you.
Why Sports and Hobbies Matter—For Both Humans and Dogs
Humans don’t need to play sports or have hobbies. We don’t need to play football, paint, or go hiking to survive. We do these things because they make life richer, provide enjoyment, and keep us mentally and physically healthy. So why are dogs considered different?!
Yes, they need basic training to fit into our human world, but they also need outlets for their energy, mental stimulation, and the chance to use their natural instincts.
Hoopers, for example, is a great low-impact sport that taps into your dog’s desire to run and move. It’s not just fun; it improves coordination and provides a mental challenge.
Scentwork, on the other hand, harnesses your dog’s incredible sense of smell and gives them a chance to engage in one of their most instinctive behaviours - sniffing! Both activities let your dog enjoy life in a different way, and the best part? You’re doing it together, building a stronger bond.
How Dog Sports Improve Obedience
Here’s something surprising for those who think obedience training is all about sit, stay, and recall: some of the most responsive dogs I’ve seen in terms of obedience have been members of my sports classes! When a dog is engaged, mentally stimulated, and having fun, they are more focused and eager to learn. By participating in activities like Scentwork or Hoopers, you’re creating an environment where your dog can thrive and form a positive fun association to training with you.
When your dog is in the habit of listening to you during a fun activity, that same responsiveness carries over into everyday life. Suddenly, your dog is more attentive on walks, more cooperative during training, and more eager to please. The relationship you build through fun activities fosters trust, and that makes traditional obedience work so much easier.
